Whether Forrest Avenue in Memphis was renamed to honor the Confederate general is still up for debate, but street signs reading “Forrest Avenue” are coming down.

Former Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton and small business owner Lemichael Wilson are also running for the seat. The election will be held October 3.

Shelby County Commissioner Tami Sawyer has announced she’s running in the 2019 mayoral race.

“It was depressing,” Commissioner Reginald Milton said of the leaky roof and peeling paint.

“Shelby County’s transfer rate is so, so far different from everyone else in the state.”

Harris is proposing the county build a brand new juvenile justice education center to replace the current detention center. He sees the new space with a full range of social services, adequate classrooms and a functioning gym.

“Cyntoia could’ve been from Memphis… the facts of her case, the poverty she grew up in. So it resonates with the work and the change were trying to make,” Sawyer said.
