With Mattel raising prices, holiday shopping early may be essential
If you need any toys for the holidays, now might be the best time to shop. Mattel, the giant behind beloved brands like Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price, American Girl and many more, announced during an earnings call that President Donald Trump’s tariffs mean prices will have to go up on many toys, especially those manufactured in China. The tariffs, part of Trump’s trade policy, include a 145% tax on all Chinese imports, and are expected to increase Mattel’s costs by approximately $270 million this year.
In response, Mattel is accelerating efforts to shift production away from China, aiming to reduce its reliance on Chinese manufacturing to below 15% by 2026. But despite those efforts, the company anticipates that some price hikes are unavoidable as it offsets the costs of global tariffs and the costs associated with moving production to new countries.
In the earnings call, Mattel Chief Executive Ynon Kreiz called on Trump to reverse the policy — or to create a loophole for toys. “Zero tariffs for toys gives the greatest number of children and families access to play,” he said.
