MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The FedEx St. Jude Classic is becoming the World Golf Championship – FedEx St. Jude Invitational, PGA and FedEx officials announced Thursday.
That means it will be one of four global tournaments featuring the best players in the world. Other stops currently include Mexico and China.
The tournament will give Memphis exposure like never before and should translate into an economic boost. It also likely means a fundraising boost for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The new, upgraded tournament starts next year and will still be played at Memphis’ Southwind golf course, but it will be in August instead of June.
David Bronczek, president and COO of FedEx Corp., spoke during the announcement today.
“I think it’s going to be great for our city, it’s going to be great for the PGA, it’s going to be great for St. Jude,” Bronczek said. “This will change the way the world looks at our city.”
