MEMPHIS — Grizzlies General Manager Zach Kleiman was a man of few words Saturday when he spoke on his team’s decision to fire head coach Taylor Jenkins.

Kleiman met with the media after the Grizzlies’ morning shootaround and said the decision to part ways with the winningest coach in franchise history, was his and his alone.

“I’m focused on how we operate. I’m responsible for everything. I’m responsible for coaching. I’m responsible for the roster. I’m not trying to absolve myself of anything,” Kleiman said. “I’m excited to see what this team can do the rest of the way but this is the conclusion I came to, that this is in the best interest of the team. We push forward with this group. This decision is mine and mine only.”

When asked if he discussed the decision to fire Jenkins with the players, most notably Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr. or Desmond Bane?

“The players were not consulted on this decision.”

The Grizzlies now turn things over to lead assistant Tuomas Iisalo, who joined the Grizzlies last summer as part of a major overhaul to Jenkins’ staff.

“Looking forward to seeing what he’s able to do with this group. There’s realistic expectations. There’s not going to time to install a bunch of things this time of year. My expectations are clarity of direction and we’ll see what we can do. Everyone here is on the same page. Everyone here is aligned on the vision and the plan and looking forward to getting back to basketball.”

Which begins Saturday night when the Grizzlies host the Los Angeles Lakers. Both teams come into FedExForum with identical 44-29 records.
