MEMPHIS – It is one of the bigger storylines heading into the Tigers’ NCAA Tournament opener Friday against Colorado State.
Make that ‘the’ biggest storyline heading to Seattle. The health of not only starting point guard Tyrese Hunter but back-up point guard Dante Harris.
Penny Hardaway provided a bit of an update on Tuesday.
Harris’ ankle injury is a little further along than Hunter’s foot injury suffered Saturday in that win over Tulane, leaving both as major question marks for Memphis.
Doubtful might be the best way to put it, but that’s not to say Hardaway is ready to rule either player out, especially Hunter.
“Yeah there is a small percentage for sure, and there is wishful thinking. Obviously, you guys know I believe in prayer. It’s going to take prayer and some to get him on that court. We’ll see what happens,” Hardaway said. “I’m praying for good ankles and good feet and everything right now. Good knees. It’s just the honest truth because, we all know, you’ve got to have some luck.”
One guy who will play in the blue and gray Friday, adding another honor to his resume.
For the second time this year, PJ Haggerty has been named an All-American. This time tabbed second team All American by the Associated Press.
Haggerty, who is averaging just a touch under 22 points a game, is the first Memphis player since Chris Douglas-Roberts back in 2008 to earn AP All-American status.
While all the accolades, including AAC Player of the Year are nice, it is not something Haggerty really thought about heading into the season.
“No. I never really had a list. I always felt like if you take care of the name on the front of your jersey, the name on the back will always be taken care of. So I feel like that’s what I live by,” Haggerty said. “All the hard work, dedication I put in, having my team, coaching staff, having my back. Trust me to make plays, it just means a lot for me getting a lot of notoriety.”
