MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The wait is over. The 2018 High School season has kicked off with Week 1 now in the books.

Highlights in the video above include wins by MUS, Cordova, Briarcrest, Olive Branch, Central and St. Benedict — including the one atCollierville, where the Dragons opened up 2018 against Olive Branch Friday night.

Olive Branch 21, Collierville 14

This game, though, was much bigger than the two teams, with Collierville coach Mike O’Neill all smiles on the sidelines and already a big winner.

Ten months removed from being diagnosed with stage four throat cancer, O’neill was back to work cancer-free.

Cordova 21, Olive Branch 14

The start of a new season also giving us familiar faces in new places, like out at Cordova, where after losing coach Anthony Jones to Mike Norvell’s staff at the U of M, the Wolves turned to another one of this city’s winningest coaches: Marcus Wimberley.

Wimberley, who left his alma mater at East after leading the Mustangs to nine playoff appearances in 12 seasons, which included winning the 2016 state title, took on Southaven in his Cordova debut.

Central 31, Melrose 6

After building winners at White Station, Briarcrest and Raleigh-Egypt, this year is Major Wright’s first year with the Central Warriors, and things started off with a bang.

Briarcrest 23, White Station 14

Friday marked the birthday of Briarcrest coach Brian Stewart. Briarcrest shut out the Spartans in the second half to give coach Stewart a nice 23-14 win for his birthday.

MUS 34, Ridgeway 0

Neighborhood rivalries don’t come any closer, with the distance between the two schools measured in yards, not miles, and this one was all Owls.

St. Benedict 34, Kingsbury 9

At St. Benedict, the Eagle Walk kicking off a new season with the visiting Kingsbury Falcons providing the opposition.
