U of M on the hunt for new head coach

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The search for a new head football coach is underway at the University of Memphis.

On Sunday, Virginia Tech announced former U of M head coach Justin Fuente had officially accepted an offer as the Hokies’ head coach.

Now, University of Memphis Director of Athletics Tom Bowen has to start looking for his replacement.

“We are in the process of putting together a list of candidates with our leadership and will begin moving forward in the search for our next head coach,” said Bowen on Sunday during a news conference.

Until then, assistant head coach and co-offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey has been named the interim head coach.

Dickey was the head coach for nine seasons at North Texas.

The University of Memphis President released a statement saying, “we are grateful for the remarkable job he’s done at the U of M, resurrecting a struggling program to reach the Top 25 nationally and the best two-year stretch in Memphis history. I have no doubt that Justin Fuente is a name you’ll be hearing for years to come. I wish him the best at Virginia Tech.”

Fuente coached the tigers for the past four seasons, essentially rebuilding a program from the ground up.

They ended the season at 9-3 and is bowl eligible for the second year in a row.

They’ll learn which bowl game they will be heading to early next week.
