KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Lady Vols will still drop the “Lady” from its name and use the Power T logo, but the University of Tennessee will introduce a uniform patch to let the Lady Vols live on.
UT agreed on the patch with Knox County legislators, CBS affiliate WVLT reported. UT Chancellor Jimmy Cheek called it a compromise “in the best interest of all parties to continue to honor the Lady Vols.”
The patch will show the Lady Vols logo. It will be worn during the 2016-17 season, but athletes can choose to wear the patch after that season if they want.
The change comes after a rebranding effort. It affects all women’s teams except basketball, which will continue to be the Lady Vols.
“We realize there have been differences of opinion with the choice to use the Power T for all of our women’s athletics teams, except for basketball,” Cheek said. “A new branding effort and a combined athletics department, however, will never erase history and tradition.”
