UPDATE: CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County announced a $10,000 award for any information leading to an arrest in the murder of Matthew Williams.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Five men were injured and another man is dead after a shooting in Southeast Memphis on Wednesday, according to the Memphis Police Department.

Officers responded to a shooting in the 4000 block of South Mendenhall in Southeast Memphis at 3:29 p.m.

The shooting occurred outside a non-profit organization, Memphis Allies site. In 2022, Youth Villages, along with community partners, launched the Memphis Allies initiative in response to the city’s escalating gun violence.

Police say five male victims were transported from the scene and one man was found dead on the scene. One man is in critical condition and four others are in non-critical condition.

The family of Matthew Williams, 22, identified him as the victim who was killed in the shooting.

The Memphis Allies released the following statement on their website:

We are heartbroken over the senseless act of gun violence on Wednesday that claimed the life of a Memphis Allies program participant at one of our sites. Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and to the staff members who had been working with the young man.

While we are devastated by Wednesday’s events, it will not shake our resolve to continue working with community leaders and partner organizations to reduce gun violence and make Memphis safer.

Please keep the victim’s family, our staff, and all of those affected by gun violence in our community in your thoughts and prayers.

The mother of Williams said that her son attended the event because he wanted to make a positive change in his life.

WREG was told by a source on the scene that the shots were fired during a drive-by shooting as people inside were sheltered in place.

“It’s not a relationship where it’s them over there and we’re over here, there is one Memphis, there is one problem and there is people coming together with the solution,” said K Durell Cowan, Founder and CEO of Heal 901.

“When you go out and you’re in these situations, you’re in these communities and trying to interrupt and stop violence there is always this looming fact that even though I am out here doing good at any moment it can continue, and it could be one of us,” said Cowan.

Cowan says that for anyone involved in the streets and wants to change, there are multiple organizations to help.

She says people can partner with Memphis Allies or Black Squad with Memphis Allies to help eliminate violence in communities.

“We’re here to help, but understand the things of your past, or the things you’ve done in the streets, that you have to right your wrongs,” said Cowan.

This is an ongoing investigation.
