MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man was shot and two men arrested after a shootout turned into a police chase on Wednesday, Memphis police say.

At 5:18 p.m., police responded to a shooting near a business in the 7000 block of East Shelby Drive. They found a man with a gunshot wound, holding a Draco-style rifle. He was taken to Regional One in critical condition.

Meanwhile, people on the scene told police that the shooters had run inside a hookah shop. Officers went to check the back of the store and saw two men getting into a Chevy Malibu near the store.

Officers say they started chasing the suspect vehicle and detained the two suspects in the area of Walker and I-240.

The car crashed into the fence at Elmwood Cemetery, but did not enter or damage the headstones at the cemetery.

Police say they found guns, including one with a Glock switch, and marijuana in the Malibu.

The man who was shot told police he had walked into a business on Shelby Drive holding his weapon. When he came out, the two men began shooting at him, and he fired back.

Thursday, shoppers and workers in the area told WREG that crime rarely happens.

“But, normally, this is a pretty good area. So, it’s shocking that someone got to shooting over here,” one person told WREG. But personally, I feel like it’s a lot of gangs around.”

A woman who spoke with WREG says something needs to be done about the violence in Memphis.

“So, we need to know how to deal with our anger, like with the shooting the other day, this is a good area. What happened? Why are we killing each other?” she said. “We need to just come together and trust in God or whatever you believe in.”

Jones’s bond has not been set. Ross’s bond is set at $10,000.
