MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police are investigating after a child arrived at a North Memphis fire station with a gunshot wound.

Memphis Police say a 9-year-old girl who had been shot arrived at Fire Station #19 on Chelsea Avenue at around 7 p.m. Thursday.

Police say the child was taken to Le Bonheur in critical condition.

According to Memphis Police, the shooting happened on Hollywood Street just south of I-40.

The victim’s mother was driving a red Infiniti when a white Infiniti with multiple suspects inside pulled up beside them. A male in a ski mask stood up out of the sunroof and fired several shots at them.

Memphis Police say the suspects fled the scene in the white Infiniti heading northbound on Hollywood Street. They have not been caught.

Veronica Cleaves, a mother of three who lives near where the shooting happened, said the sutuation breaks her heart.

“I look at it like, there’s a whole generation being lost out here,” she said. “And it’s sad because you can’t go anywhere in Memphis, now, to really have a good time, you can’t take your kids anywhere and just feel like okay your safe.”

Le Bonheur told us back in October that 147 children had been treated for gunshot wounds so far this year. Last year, the entire year’s total was 150 children shot.

Cleaves believes the only way to lower that number is for everyone to pitch in.

“I think it’s time for the community to actually come together and for the parents to start stepping up and doing more because the police can’t do it on their own and that’s just the bottom line,” she said.
