MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The District Attorney’s Office says it wants to transfer a juvenile suspect charged with a woman’s rape and murder last year to adult court.

The 17-year-old suspect is charged with first-degree murder and rape in the death of 19-year-old Aaliyah Kyles, who was killed last July at a house on Bald Eagle Drive in Hickory Hill.

Neighbors said they heard a disturbance and gunshots, and saw a male in all black flee the scene. Kyles was later discovered in the bathtub, undressed and with multiple gunshot wounds.

“The juvenile suspect later admitted to breaking into Kyles’ home, sexually assaulting her, and fatally shooting her,” a spokesperson for the D.A.’s office said.

District Attorney Steve Mulroy made a statement on the case Friday, saying that “asking the court to transfer a juvenile to adult court is one of the most consequential decisions a prosecutor has to make. The differences between juvenile and adult consequences for the same crimes can be vast.”

He continued, “That said, the victim, Aaliyah Kyles, was a teenager too with a promising life ahead of her. The suspect admitted to breaking into her apartment, sexually assaulting her, and fatally shooting her. Seeking justice for Aaliyah and her family warrants this request.”
