MEMPHIS, Tenn — The Memphis man accused of going on a shooting spree in 2022 was back in court Tuesday morning.
Ezekiel Kelly was escorted into court Tuesday by the Detention Response team.
Kelly is facing more than two dozen felonies three of the charges of first-degree murder. This is a case prosecutors have said they plan to seek the death penalty if convicted.
“You are invoking your right to represent yourself in this matter,” said Judge James Jones.
Judge Jones says he addressed where things stand leading up to the moment Kely is set for trial.
Last month Kelly informed the court that he would represent himself in this capital murder case.
On Feb. 4, Kelly told the court more time was needed to go over evidence.
“Sir, I need to make sure that you are reviewing the discovery,” said Judge Jones.
Kelly’s now-former defense attorney reported there were thousands of pages of evidence and more than 350 videos Kelly would need to review on a computer.
“They are creating a plan for you as far as having access to computers for review of your discovery,” said Judge Jones.
This is a case dating to 2022 when Ezekiel Kelly is accused of going on a shooting spree while live-streaming part of it.
Three people were killed others were injured as the entire city was on lockdown.
Judge Jones reiterated the court’s decision to continue making headway despite Kelly’s decision to represent himself.
Kelly is set to appear in court next Friday, Feb. 21. His previous team of defense attorneys will act as advisors. The trial is still scheduled for July 14.
