MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 23-year-old man was found guilty of a murder he committed in 2018 when he was only 17 years old.
On Friday, a jury found Keylone Jones guilty of second-degree murder for the part he played in the shooting death of a man on October 9, 2018.
On the night of the shooting, the district attorney’s office says Memphis Police responded to an aggravated assault call at 542 Jacklyn Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found Michael Hawkins suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Hawkins was taken to Regional One Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The day after the shooting, Jones, also known as “Nu Nu,” was identified as a suspect and brought in for questioning.
Reports say he admitted to planning and participating in the shooting, along with two other juveniles. He told police that the shooting was a retaliation against a man who he said had shot at him the previous week.
According to the district attorney’s office, Jones confessed that he and the other juveniles involved walked up to Hawkins and shot him multiple times.
His sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
