Senate approves judicial committee to review DA Mulroy allegations

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Senate passed Senator Brent Taylor’s resolution allowing the Tennessee Supreme Court to appoint a judicial committee to review allegations against D.A. Mulroy.

“The resolution passed 27 – 6, so there’s a lot of support for the investigation into these three D.A.s and also the creation of a disciplinary board for district attorneys going forward,” said Senator Taylor.

The resolution creates a judicial panel, appointed by the state Supreme Court, to review complaints against district attorneys in the state. Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy would be one of them.

Senator Taylor says it will build more transparency and accountability in Tennessee; however, D.A. Mulroy disagrees.

“This from the start has been a politically motivated exercise to raise his political profile and get attention,” said D.A. Mulroy. “He’s certainly done that. But in the process, over the last ten months, he’s distracted our office, disrupted our office and made it harder for us to do our job.”

D.A. Mulroy has been openly criticized by Senator Taylor for a while now, and he’s accused the D.A. of being ‘soft on crime,’ and he filed ethics complaints against him.

“They’ve never had any basis, and they still don’t have any basis,” said D.A. Mulroy. “And you don’t have to take my word for it, because you have the ethics complaints have been dismissed.”

D.A. Mulroy says this resolution and Senator Taylor’s previous actions have disrupted the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office.

While the Tennessee lawmaker tells WREG, D.A. Mulroy should be receptive to the resolution.

“D.A. Mulroy has consistently said that I’m full of sh*t and if he believes that, he ought to welcome the very committee that can prove him right,” said Sen. Taylor.

Senator Taylor says the resolution will give citizens a voice, however, D.A. Mulroy believes this is yet another form of a distraction, rather than a resolution.
