MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One of the former police officers charged in the Tyre Nichols beating death case is back in federal custody after an alleged threat against his ex-girlfriend.
Emmitt Martin’s bond was revoked Friday in a federal courthouse in Memphis. He was led away in handcuffs.
Martin is accused of making the threat to “handle the victim and her boyfriend” via text message on Feb. 13, according to a police report. Martin and the victim share a child together, police said.
In the text exchange, Martin accused his child’s mother of discussing his case with their child.
The defense argued that Martin knew the case was being discussed after his daughter’s birthday earlier this month.
The child requested $500 and when Martin asked why, according to the defense, she said “because soon you will not be able to give me anything.”
At a hearing Friday, a magistrate said this is a violation of his bond conditions. The penalty is the eradication of bond and a return to custody.
The magistrate also mentioned another threat Martin allegedly made against another person.
Pretrial services filed the petition to have Martin’s bond revoked.
A federal prosecutor said they do not want Martin taken into custody, just that he has no contact with the victim and another woman.
Martin pleaded guilty in August to two of the four counts against him in the Nichols case – excessive force and conspiracy to witness tamper. He is out on bond awaiting sentencing in the Nichols case.
